Gymnastics Training Fundamentals
A practical overview of body shapes, strength, flexibility, balance and safe skill progression.

Start with body shapes
Hollow, arch, straight, tuck, pike and straddle positions are the language of gymnastics. Consistent shapes make later skills easier to understand and control.
Develop physical preparation
Strength, flexibility, speed and endurance should support technical work. Conditioning must match the athlete’s age, experience and current training phase.
Use progressions
Complex skills are built from simpler actions. A useful progression establishes the correct shape, teaches direction and timing, and only then increases height, speed or difficulty.
Quality before quantity
Repeated poor technique reinforces poor movement. Coaches should define a clear technical goal for every drill and stop a set when quality declines.
